40th Anniversary of Roberto Cavalli

To celebrate the 40Th anniversary of his label, Roberto Cavalli did an exclusive interview with Harper's Bazaar accompanied by a photo shoot with his wife, his son, circus clowns,a lion and a model.Just an ordinary day in Cavalli's life.
He talks about the beginning of his carrier, the fashion industry and copying, the support of his wife, his leopard signature print and... masturbating.

Here are some of the highlights from the interview:

On what he wishes he knew when he started building his label:

"I know many things. Forty years ago, I expected all the world. I was very enthusiastic, but I didn't understand that you have to follow the system. The big fish run the show." But now you're a big fish. "I'm a middle fish, but there are small fish that are poisonous."

About copying his signature leopard print:

"In the beginning, when people copied me I was happy." But now, "I can understand when H&M or Zara copies me, but I hate it when big designers copy me. You have a big name, you should never copy me."

About his love for fashion and beautiful women:

Of course I think about a beautiful woman to dress, because that's my way," he says with a shrug. Is there a difference? "Yes," he says. "I don't masturbate thinking about fashion."

Interview with : MILICA BALAC

Milica Balac is a 21 years old Serbian fashion designer, born and raised in Novi Sad who with her friend Marina established a brand called EMMES. She had her first fashion show at the age of 16 and her new collection was recently presented at the Jacobs Fashion Selection in Belgrade.
She is finishing fashion design and textile design course in Belgrade and also Istituto Callegari.

When did you start having interest for fashion?
I started having interest for fashion at the age of 16 when I enrolled into pattern making high school. Shortly after that I had my first fashion show with a friend Marina and from that point on we created a name for ourselves called EMMES.

What was your inspiration for this collection?
I was mainly inspired with the combination of two worlds, the male and the female costumes from the 17Th century.

Who's your favorite designer?
I don't have one but I certainly love to be up to date with the collections that other designers do.
I admire John Galliano the most though.

What's your favourite part of wardrobe and why?
It depends of the mood I'm in but something that suits me the most, something I like to design the most is lingerie. With lingerie a girl can always feel beautiful, feminine, secure and powerful.

What do you think the biggest problem Serbian girls have when it comes to dressing?
Role models. Wanting to always stay in fashion they usually don't respect their body types and they make a lot of mistakes. All the girls look the same. They don't wear the clothes, clothes wear them instead of just making it a part of their personality and enlightening who they are within.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
The plans I made in the past weren't always good but they opened a lot of opportunities for me which at the end turned up to be even better.
First I want to finish my studies and then I'll focus more on creating. I certainly see myself in this profession, in Serbia or abroad.

Carolina Herrera was born in 1939 in Venezuela. Best known in the UK for her line of perfumes, she founded her company in 1980 and moved to New York in 1981 where she dressed Jackie Onassis for the last 12 years of her life. She has four children by two partners and lives in New York with her second husband, Reinaldo Herrera Guevara, Marqués de Torre Casa. Carolina Herrera's CH lifestyle store is at 120 Mount Street, London W1 (020-3441 0965)

My favourite item of clothing... is always a very glamorous evening gown. The colour depends on the occasion. I rarely wear red but I had one in red that I kept coming back to because I had lots of fun every time I wore it.

A book that changed me...There isn't a book that has changed me, but I have favourites such as 'Pride and Prejudice' which I often re-read.

My five-year plan... business-wise, it's to open shops everywhere in the world. Personally, I don't know where I want to be. You have to live life as it comes; anything could happen between now and then.

My life in six words... It has been a wonderful life.
